For many food businesses in Australia, it’s a legal requirement that at least one Food Safety Supervisor is employed for each premises from which the business operates. This online Food Safety Supervisor course meets all legal requirements for Food Safety Supervisor training and is valid across all states and territories.
If you’re based in New South Wales, you’ll need a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate as well as your Food Safety Supervisor Statement of Attainment. Part 1 - Lesson Quizzes
At the end of each lesson you need to complete a multiple-choice quiz. Once you've scored 100% you're able to move onto the next lesson. You have five attempts at each quiz, but don't worry if you use up all your attempts - just get in touch and we can help you out at no extra charge!
Part 2 - Case Studies
There are two case studies to complete during the Food Safety Supervisor course (five in NSW, see below for further information). The purpose of these is to check that you can apply what you've learnt to a real-life situation. Simply read the text and answer a series of multiple-choice questions about the best way to handle the scenarios.
Part 3 - Reading Activity
There's a reading activity on potentially hazardous foods. Simply download the PDF from the course page and then complete the multiple-choice quiz.
NSW Only:
In 2015, the NSW Food Authority introduced additional requirements for Food Safety Supervisor training. These include four key focus areas: allergen management, safe egg handling, cleaning and sanitising practices, and Food Act offences. To obtain a NSW Food Safety Supervisor Certificate, all four focus areas must be completed.
This course is also appropriate and sufficient for NSW Food Safety Supervisor recertification.
Part 4 - Observer Report / Declaration
To assess practical skills such as handwashing, you’ll need to ask someone you work with, or someone else working in the food industry, to complete an Observer Report. This form is completed by someone who has seen you perform food safety tasks. It can be completed online or downloaded and filled out manually.
Food Safety Supervisor training is available for a number of food industries. When you complete your student registration, you will provide contact information for a nominated observer and select your industry from a dropdown menu.
The industry you choose determines which Observer Report will be issued and the units of competency that will be displayed on your Statement of Attainment upon completion of your Food Safety Supervisor course.

The Food Safety Supervisor course has been designed so that you can complete it at your own pace. The duration of the course varies depending on your existing knowledge of Food Safety and your understanding of the English language.
On average, most people complete the lessons and associated quizzes within about six to eight hours. The other parts of the assessment can take anywhere between ten minutes to four hours depending on who you choose to complete your Observer Report and whether you need any extra assistance with the course content.
It's not unusual for students to sign up and complete the course on the same day, but we do give you up to 12 months to complete everything.
Don't forget that you don't need to do the entire course in one go - you can log on and log off as many times as you need. Some students choose to study for half an hour each day or an hour per week until they've finished.
You need to make sure that you have the following in order to be able to complete the Food Safety Supervisor course online:
1. A modern web browser
Our courses use some of the latest eLearning technologies to deliver the courses. You'll need a modern web browser to view and complete the course, and it's important that you have Javascript enabled.
2. An email address
During the registration process, we'll ask you for your email address. This is a mandatory requirement for you to be able to access our systems. Email addresses cannot be shared by students.
3. Adobe PDF Reader or Adobe Acrobat
Some of the forms that you need to complete (such as the Observer Report) are in PDF format. To get the latest version of Adobe PDF Reader, go here.
Food Safety First courses work on most computers, laptops and tablet devices. Due to the small screen size, we don't recommend using the course on mobile phones.
For Food Safety First to deliver nationally recoginised training, it’s important that we follow the rules and regulations set by the Vocational Education and Training (VET) authorities and relevant Industry Skills Councils.
The course content that we need to deliver is determined by the Industry Skills Councils. They also have rules about how training organisations need to assess students training to be a Food Safety Supervisor.
One of the rules is that students need to be observed practising food safety skills. As we deliver Food Safety Supervisor training online, we can't see you doing that through your computer. It can be difficult to arrange classroom assessments at dates and times that suit everyone, and we have many students that live in remote and regional areas who wouldn't be able to travel so far.
At Food Safety First, we've found the easiest way to meet this requirement is to provide you with an Observer Report so that you can ask someone in your workplace to confirm that they've seen you do things like washing your hands correctly and wearing appropriate clothing for work.
Our aim is to make this course as simple as possible for you and to remove any roadblocks that will prevent you getting your Statement of Attainment as soon as possible.
When you've completed all of the quizzes and finalised your Observer Report, you need to complete a form on the course page called the ‘Final Submission’. This only takes about five minutes - we need to ask you a few questions and confirm that you completed the course without assistance.
Once you've done this, we will process your assessment within 1-2 business days. You will then receive a copy of your Statement of Attainment by email. And if you requested a copy to be posted to you, we will print this onto premium certificate paper and you should receive that a day or so later too.

There are five industries that require Food Safety Supervisor training - Hospitality, Retail, Food Processing, Health & Community, and Transport & Distribution.
Although the course is similar for each industry, it’s not the same. When you complete your Food Safety Supervisor training you receive a Statement of Attainment that lists the units of competency you’ve attained. These units of competency are specific to your industry sector.

People requiring Food Safety Supervisor certification work in many different roles. From chefs to childcare workers to food truck operators, the list is varied. However, the specific Food Safety Supervisor training you require depends on your role, and sometimes also the location where you work.
